Aat Vuik - Wildlife Photography
In general:
During my trip in february / march 2009 I have seen many rhino's in many different parts of the Kruger.
Most sightings however were in the southern part and more specific between Lower Sabie & Crocodile Bridge and between Lower Sabie & Tshokwane
Best times early morning during sunsrise and late afternoon.
Some impressions:
- In one afternoon drive 24 rhino in
the area between Crocodile Bridge
and Lower Sabie within 3 hours
- A group of 11 Rhino near Pretoriuskop restcamp just before we left the Kruger ..felt like a "See you next time greeting"
- Morning drive on dirtroad from Satara to Tshokwane 9 rhino within 5 km
So now I like to take you with me to have a look at a number of sightings.
One of the rhino sightings with mother and child.
Just....beautiful
Special to these rhino's... they were part of a big 5 within 2 hours and 15 minutes.
Just a tour following the S28 and some other small dirtroads in the Lower Sabie - Crocodile Bridge area.
Funny story about this sighting:
I was focussed on the 5 rhino's to photograph them.
Later at home and looking at all my pictures I suddenly saw the male lion at the foreground (in the middle). I just did not see him at all at the time I made the pictures.
This big rhino was first to the right of me and I was just waiting for him to cross the road....but...no..he decided to walk about 3 km in front of me not leaving the dirtroad...
I was running out of time to get back in time to Satara restcamp. Even coming a bit closer he turned around in seconds to warn me not to come any closer. He was after a female I believe. Smelling at the dirtroad from left to right , going over a hill...3 km's can be long...believe me... Finally he left the road to go after his "girlfriend"
